Annually since 1974, the Apple Butter Festival fills the park and streets of downtown Berkeley Springs on Saturday and Sunday of Columbus Day weekend in October.
The traditional harvest festival is kicked off by a nostalgic hometown parade on Saturday morning followed by two days’ worth of family-friendly games and contests, music, country food, fine arts, and local crafts. The undisputed star of the festival is the spicy apple butter stirred in giant copper kettles in the middle of the square.
With no admission fee and activities for all ages, this is the perfect day or weekend experience for everyone from grandma to the kids.
The festival features demonstrations of the traditional method of making apple butter using copper kettles over an open fire. Visitors can also enjoy live music, local crafts, and food vendors selling apple-themed dishes such as apple fritters, apple cider, and apple pie. The festival also offers activities for children, such as face painting and pony rides. The festival is a celebration of the region’s history and the tradition of preserving fruits through the winter months

Berkeley Springs celebrates its most unique historic site, George Washington’s Bathtub, with a weekend devoted to colonial food specials, dollar sales, and local history. Tasting vintages from state wineries may give the event its name but as usual, the most popular item is ramping both raw and prepared.
Vintages for tasting range from true Italian concord to light white Riesling. “The winemakers all have a story to tell as you sample their wines,” said Laura Smith, Administrator of Travel Berkeley Springs which produces the event. Smith considers the chance to taste and buy rare state wines as the major draw for regulars. “People buy their favorites by the case.”

This farmers market, held every Sunday from April to December, offers visitors the opportunity to buy fresh, locally-grown produce and other products from farmers and artisans in the area. Event: Girlfriend Weekend

Fortunetelling, belly dancing, spa specials, African art, and more are part of the exuberant “Hey, Girlfriend” weekend, “For more than a dozen years we’ve used this event to celebrate Berkeley Springs’ position as the girlie capital of West Virginia,” said Laura Smith, administrator of the sponsoring Travel Berkeley Springs. There are sidewalk and shop sales, art classes, and abundant live music along with great lodging packages making it an irresistible come-with-your-gal-pals getaway.
Event: Concert in the Park (Recommended)
Date: The concert series takes place every Saturday at 5:30 pm in July and August

Concerts as well as community dances with live music have been a central focus of the Morgan Arts Council since the organization’s beginning. The Summer Concert Series was the brainchild of the late Linda Fallon, introduced in 1987 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of MAC. In the years since, it has become MAC’s best-known program drawing more than 40,000 attendees over the years, many returning year after year. Music of all genres is included with high-quality performers and recording artists from all over the USA including Grammy nominees and other award winners. The Ice House provides a backup rain location in the summer. During colder months an indoor concert series makes for hot music at the Ice House; performers often are artists brought in to work with youth in the schools.
