SAGE MOON HERB SHOP

(5.0)

33 Fairfax Street Berkeley Springs, WV 25411

Sage Moon Herb Shop opened in 2003. We are located in downtown Berkeley Springs, WV, a lovely mountan town known for its healing waters.

We are here to promote a healthy and natural approach to life through a sensible diet, wise food choices and the appropriate use of herbs as food and medicine. We cannot diagnose or prescribe but we can help you safely choose herbs that may be of benefit to you.

The store is owned by Concetta Pirrone (Tina). Here is her story as it relates to Sage Moon.

My interest in health started somewhere in the ’70’s. I was fortunate enough to have a father who was an organic gardener, and a mother who was a great cook. Being of Sicilian descent, we sure had a mediterranean diet most of the time and enjoyed meals made from plants and animals more than from boxes and cans. Of course, there were boxes, cans, candy and cola too, after all, it was part of those times.

I had the great fortune of having an herb shop, health food store and natural foods cafe all within a few miles of my home. Anyone from suburban Maryland area will know of Smile Herb Shop (still alive and well after more than 40 yrs!), Beautiful Day and Berwyn Cafe. I worked at Smile in my youth and on for about 10 years total, having the benefit of learning from some wonderful herbalists like Tom Wolfe and Claudia Wingo. Tom and Linda Wolfe are the co-owners of Smile. Here, I also met Jim Duke (wonderful author and ethnobotanist), made some lifelong friends, and found my Spiritual Teacher, Meher Baba.

I attended David WInston’s 2 year herbal training (2004-2005) in NJ and am currently attending his current 2 year training online (2015). Other teachers have been Kathleen Maier at Sacred Plant Traditions in Charlottesville, Matthew Wood, Stephen Buhner, and Theresa Boardwine. In addition, I have had distance learning with Christopher Hobbs and Paul Bergner’s school in Colorado, North American Institute of Medical Herbalism.

I studied Macrobiotics with Michael Rossoff and macrobiotic cooking classes with Caren Bakkum. I became a Massage Therapist in 1990 and had a practice of Massage, Foot Reflexology and Energy Work for nearly 12 years. Currently I am studying Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy and will be certified in spring of 2015.

    Great Organic dishes!!
Had a kale-tofu stir-fry. It was great and the cook was able to adjust for my dietary needs. Also had a chia-seed pudding dessert. The servings were small and seemed a little pricy for the size of serving. Located at the back of the Portals gift shop in the herb and tea shop area. Able to sit outside. Crowded, quaint atmosphere.

    Delicious, Clean food!
We wandered into this cafe directly after receiving our spa treatments and it was the perfect way to satiate our hunger and eat clean food. The offerings were all vegetarian and vegan, and the owner/chef made everything as requested. Had a very personal feel, and the seating in the back, outside with fresh air and peaceful vibe was great. I would highly recommend this spot!

    Nice vegetarian option!
This little place is tucked in the back of the Sage Moon Herb Shop which is in the Portals building across from Berkeley Springs Park.

I had just heard of it recently so a friend and I decided to try it out. One downside is that the menu is extremely limited at this point , but they are working on expanding it. They have takeout service and a few tables out back on a nice secluded little porch which is filled with greenery, overlooks a stream, and is very inviting. It’s like a little oasis of serenity.

The burrito plate is quite good and the salads are made to order. They pride themselves on sourcing locally and serving healthy food options. Because of this, the menu can change a bit daily due to availability.

They also serve a variety of teas and have fresh made cold herbal teas on hand.

The day we were there they had delicious lavender cookies for one of their dessert options.

If you are looking for healthy vegetarian options this place is a nice choice.
