Morgan County Observatory

(4.5)

9047 Winchester Grade Rd, Berkeley Springs, WV 25411

The Morgan County Observatory Foundation is a non-profit organization focused on improving interest in the sciences among West Virginians. It’s our belief the construction of a modern observatory to house the county’s research-grade telescope, will go a long way in fostering this interest. The MCOF also aims to encourage participation in astronomy projects via the internet, allowing people all over the state, and beyond, to benefit from the resurrection of this telescope.

There will be stargazing, refreshments, movies and hands on astronomy exhibits to entertain folks of all ages.

Scenic Winchester Grade Road is worth the trip and a stop at the Observatory is icing on the cake. It’s not something you’d expect to find on this mountain backroad. An unexpected surprise, to say the least. Try it, you’ll like it.

If it’s open during your visit, it’s worth the drive south of town to check out this little gem. The guy who operates it is great at explaining what you’re looking at. Perfect for families!

We saw on the Berkeley Springs website weekly events that there would be a “Public Star Party” at the Morgan County Observatory the weekend we were visiting BS. We have an 8 inch telescope and wanted to see this 16 inch telescope in action. They do ask for a $2 donation – but we put more in their jar. The party was well attended and being out-of-towners I wasn’t sure – but we fit right in. Very interesting presentations and Kevin was very funny.

The observatory was a nice trip outside of Berkley Springs WV. It had fascinating information. A nice day trip from the DC metro area.
